March is Women’s History Month. 2022 also marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX. Opportunities for women in sports increased exponentially in 1972, when a petite, strong-shouldered Japanese American from Hawai`i helped usher a barrier-breaking amendment through Congress. Patsy Mink, the first woman of color elected to the House of Representatives, fought to pass Title IX, a law that prevented federally-funded educational institutions from discriminating on the basis of sex.
