Chief Seattle Club - From our 2019 Excluded, Inside the Lines Exhibit
As we look towards Indigenous Peoples' Day on Monday, October 11, we bring back a feature on the Chief Seattle Club from our 2019 “Excluded, Inside the Lines” exhibit on the history of redlining, beginning with the exclusion of Native people from Seattle.
Located at 416 2nd Avenue, the Chief Seattle Club’s new building will look and feel like a Native building. It will include 80 units of low-income housing, and commercial and office space. It also will have a satellite clinic for the Seattle Indian Health Board. Image courtesy of Chief Seattle Club.
“[The] number one [most pressing need for Native Americans in Seattle] is housing… The other thing is just noticing Native people. One thing that really deeply concerns me is that this city does not feel like a Native city in the way that it should. We are a city that is named after a chief… we have this amazing history. It’s not just about Native people. When we see that Native people in culture or art are profiled, we just do better for everyone.” – Colleen Echohawk, Chief Seattle Club
