Despite the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, anti-Chinese sentiment persisted and grew more violent.

In the Northwest labor activist were calling for the expulsion of all Chinese resident as early as the fall of 1885. In February 1886 a mob did successfully forcibly remove over 200 Chinese residents from Seattle.
